Beware: Doing “THIS” while Pregnant can Cause Major Problems!

This world will give your children enough challenges, for which, they will need to  overcome.  As mother’s, we do NOT need to help our babies have challenges from the womb.

Amnesty International reported that “…women in the USA have a higher risk of dying of pregnancy-related complications than those in 49 other countries, including Kuwait, Bulgaria, and South Korea.”  And, “…African-American women are nearly four times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than white women”.

How does a mother cause challenges for her baby when she is pregnant? 

A mother causes challenges for herself and her baby when she is pregnant by “eating for two” in a  manner that is detrimental or damaging (at best) to both herself and baby.  CBS News recently released an article about how diet during pregnancy IS safe and reduces risk for pregnancy complications.  A couple of highlights in the article were that:

  • Researchers found that diets were tied to health benefits for pregnant moms.  Women who went on a calorie-restricted diet were 33 percent less likely to develop pre-eclampsia, a spike in blood pressure caused by significant amounts of protein in the urine.  Left untreated, the condition can be fatal to a mom and baby, according to the Mayo Clinic.
  • Mothers’ risk of gestational diabetes was 60 percent lower with a calorie-controlled diet, and their risk of gestational high blood  pressure was 70 percent lower, compared with the other groups.  The risk of premature birth was also reduced 32 percent in dieting moms.

…with our recently born son, Excellence Success Walker (born on March 18, 2012)Lead researcher, Dr. Shakila  Thangaratinam, a clinical  senior lecturer and consultant obstetrician at  Queen Mary, University  of London, said “… following a controlled diet has the potential to reduce the risk of a number of pregnancy complications.”

James 2:20 KJV says, “…faith without works is dead.”

Like other mother’s, I have faith for healthy pregnancies. But, I know that any pregnant woman is setting herself and her baby up for health problems or death when she eats large portions of food high in sodium, transfats, artificial sugar, and remains sedentary throughout her pregnancy.  

As mother’s we have a calling to protect, nurture and steward over our children spiritually and physically.  The physical aspect of this calling is crucial in pregnancy because we are THE only chosen vessel to give our babies what they need physically for the first 9 months of their life.

Do we encourage a bodybuilders diet and fitness program during  pregnancy?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!  But, we do recommend: well-balanced (portion-controlled) meals for pregnancy that include plenty of fruits, vegetables and water.

“A pregnant woman needs to be healthy, so her babies will be healthy”, said our eldest daughter.

Our other children agreed.  All of our children are seen below:

Lastly, if you are worried that eating healthily will make for a small baby…

DON’T WORRY!  Many women have eaten nutritiously and had big, healthy babies.  I eat healthily and recently birthed this 9.5 pound 21.5 inch long baby without medication.

So, BE ENCOURAGED to give yourself and your baby THE healthiest food you are able to give during pregnancy and beyond.

Does adoption mean that I am giving up on God?

 As Mother’s Day approaches, I am overjoyed about being a mother and the heartfelt celebration of other mothers near and far.  However, my previous prenatal losses keep me mindful of the many women and couples who are not overjoyed about Mother’s Day because they are beginning to doubt if they will ever have children.

Miscarriages, stillborn births, and/or failed fertility treatments have stolen their joy, like a thief in the night.  It takes a strong woman to keep trying to conceive despite it all.   And, if you are this woman of strength-who knows that you know -what I’m talking about-keep your head up and be encouraged!

The traditional belief about having children can lock a mother/couple dealing with infertility issues or repeated prenatal loss into a mental box of hopelessness and despair.  The insensitive limits of this mental box implies that there is only one “right” way to have a child, which is biologically. And, it gives the impression that biological related families is THE most important factor when having children. This is NOT true! 

Picture Think about it, when you look at a family, do you really say, what a beautiful biologically related family?  Or, do you just say, what a beautiful family? 
My experience with adoption and biologically having children tells me that FAMILY is FAMILY.  Therefore, follow the peace in your heart on how to expand YOUR family.  There are many wonders to having children that FAR outweigh not having children because you are waiting to have them a certain way-which may or may not be God’s will for your life.

Be encouraged to…

…have a NEW beginning to build your family.  Release any sense of shame or failure commonly felt among those considering adoption after dealing with infertility or repeated prenatal loss.

Philippians 1:20 King James Version (KJV), says: “According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

Confidently, take hold of a FRESH way of thinking that  allows you and yours to consider adoption as a means of giving your fertility TO God -NOT giving up on God.  Embrace a different way of thinking about the fact that God supports adoption. For instance, Moses was adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter, and all Gentiles (anyone who is not Jewish) are adopted into God’s family through receiving His son (Ephesians 1:5  KJV). Many would even agree that Joseph became the earthly father of the Lord Jesus through adoption and raised him as his own biological son. 

So, Does Adoption Mean that you are giving up on God?

Only you can truly answer that question.  But, from this point forward, let other people’s birth stories be something you continue to celebrate and not something you are pressured to imitate.  The same God that blessed those who conceive biologically can bless your parenthood journey however HE WILLS.

Why Would Anyone Choose to Give Birth 5 Times WITHOUT Medication?

PictureYes, I chose to give birth to all five of our precious children in this picture without medication.

Perhaps, you think I am a glutton for punishment and I enjoy pain?  Or, maybe you are wondering if I walk on fire in my spare time and natural childbirth is child’s play to me.


The truth is that I do not like pain- period- and I avoid it at all cost!  Before I met my husband and I was much younger, I would NOT have thought about having natural childbirth. 

Thankfully, fear was not an issue at all when my husband (and the father of our 5 little blessings) and I began having children.  What a joy to be free to have multiple children with the one you love.

So, how did I go from having a fear of childbirth, to now, having five natural/non-medicated childbirths where pain and fear is NOT a factor?

And, more importantly, what proven-tips can I give to help you control/eliminate your pain and to give birth with confidence?

Here are a few highlights of our most recent -beautiful birth:

Of our 3rd son and 5th child named, “Excellence Success Walker”.  He weighed 9.5 pounds and was 21.5 inches long at birth.  I am 7.5 cm to 8 cm dilated in the first 2 photos below.  I just finished a contraction in this first picture below. 
And, I am listening to my favorite “birthing CD” in this second photo below.  
There is SO…MUCH peace in this room.  And, Pastor Rich is ministering a word in DUE SEASON throughout each contraction.

Picture This picture (to the left) was taken when contractions were coming every minute, and we were about 5-7 minutes away from seeing our precious little one.

And, this picture (to the right) was taken during a contraction and his head could be seen by those in the room!  We are about 1-2 minutes from seeing our son.



HE IS HERE!  Daddy is cutting the cord.

Excellence Success Walker arrived on March 18, 2012.  As it was with Daniel in the bible (Daniel 5:12 KJV), may this son also have an “excellent spirit” rest upon him.  And, may he walk in “success” in every area of his life.

Nausea, Fatigue, Pregnancy Complications, etc. will NOT overtake you when you have this “FRUIT”

Picture Our pregnancy journey for our precious little Walker Baby # 5 is coming to an end.  However, I cannot help but to think about my fellow pregnant mothers who are standing in faith to be healed from early pregnancy symptoms and/or pregnancy complications that have developed throughout their pregnancy. 

Even though, you may STILL feel nauseous, fatigue, and an overall sense of bodily discomforts, and/or the pressures of life (i.e., being a wife, mother, volunteer, entrepreneur/employee, student, etc) -BE ENCOURAGED!  With this “FRUIT”, none of these things will overtake you.

Because you are a spirit being, who has a soul and lives in a physical body, you can benefit from a spirit, soul and body approach to matters that affect every area of your life, including pregnancy discomforts or issues.

As it relates to the physical aspect of what you are experiencing in this pregnancy…

Yes, there is always medications to treat various pregnancy conditions. But, ALL medications (prescriptions and non-prescriptions) have side effects for you and/or your baby. Let’s take nausea for example, there are nonprescription medication, such as Emetrol, Bendectin, etc.,  And, prescription drugs, like Zofran, Compazine or Tigan, etc. that may have been recommended to you by your Obstetrician, especially if you have experience with hyperemesis gravidarum, which is a severe nausea in pregnancy that may result in you being treated at the hospital with intravenous (IV) fluids and medications.

However, there are a host of safe and effective healthy alternatives to consider, such as ginger for nausea and a host of other alternatives for a variety of other pregnancy discomforts, regardless to the severity.  So, BEFORE using medications to treat pregnancy symptoms or complications, be sure to seek the peace of God and ask your Midwife or Doula for natural alternatives.  Also, feel free to email us at  kingdompregnancy@gmail.com , if you do not have a Midwife or Doula.

As it relates to the Spirit and Soulful aspects of what you are experiencing during this pregnancy…

This POWERFUL “FRUIT”…

Picture …will bring you an overall sense of well-being regardless of your pregnancy issue(s).  It is the “Fruit of the Spirit”-Galatians 5:22-23 AMP Bible.

The Fruit of the Spirit can complement the remedies you are using to treat your physical pregnancy symptoms and help you focus MORE on the benefits of each “Fruit” than how you feel.  For instance:

Love- This Fruit of the Spirit will help you focus on the fact that God loves you so much that He has given you the honor to conceive a baby.

Joy- This Fruit of the Spirit will help you focus on all of the joy of being a mother -what a GIFT from God!

Peace- This Fruit of the Spirit will help remind you to focus on the peace that comes from knowing that- “this too shall pass” (i.e., your pregnancy discomforts or issues).

Longsuffering- This Fruit of the Spirit also refers to patience.  James 1:3KJV says, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.  Every pregnancy and child is different.  Focus on how this Fruit is molding you for motherhood with THIS baby by equipping you with more patience from this experience.

GentlenessAs God comforts you during this time, this Fruit of the Spirit can help you focus on being more gentle and comforting when dealing with others also dealing with similar challenges.  2 Corinthians 1:4 KJV

Goodness- The goodness of God rest on the inside of you, so this Fruit of the Spirit
can help you focus on speaking good things over your pregnancy and being a testimony to behave in a good manner towards others- regardless to how you feel.

Faith- This Fruit of the Spirit can boost your faith by helping you focus on God hearing and answering your prayers that are according to His will ( 1 John 5:14)-Like, prayers of pregnancy healing, financial provision, and more. 

Meekness- Refers to being humble/teachable.  This Fruit of the Spirit will help you focus on being teachable and humble in HIM throughout any pregnancy discomforts/issues.

And, lastly,

Temperance- also means self-restraint/self-control.  This Fruit of the Spirit will strengthen you to control temptations to complain, worry, etc. Instead, you will have a jolt to focus on believing that God is FAITHFUL to you, your baby and family through it all.

Should I be “Nesting” or Resting?

Our Newest Little Blessing is Likely to Arrive Within the Next 2 Weeks!

And, it is an exciting time in the Walker household!  I am someone who thoroughly enjoys being productive.

Picture But, as you can see by this picture (to the left), even I have my moments where I need to stop and rest “a little”.  That is- if Pastor Rich’s “protect my wife (even when she doesn’t want me to) instinct,” doesn’t stop me in my tracks all together.  LOL!

Seriously though, I’ve learned to TRULY thank God for Pastor Rich, whose love for me- protects me from me -being willing to over do it- at times.  Pastor Rich’s sacrificial reminder for me to take care of myself, helps me not to be drained or overwhelmed in the midst of it all.  I love that man!  And, I am thankful for Pastor Rich’s God-kind of love (i.e., agape) for me.

In like manner, God’s love guide us as pregnant women to know whether or not we should be nesting or resting?

Picture As you may know, this concept of “nesting” goes beyond an average desire to be neat and tidy.  Nesting is characterized as being more of an uncontrollable desire of a pregnant woman to clean and organize in preparation for their baby’s arrival. 

Unfortunately, for some expecting mothers, nesting is synonymous with acting bossy, busy and eventually exhausted from preparing for the imminent arrival of their newborn? 

So, W.W.J.S (i.e., What Would Jesus Suggest) to a pregnant woman oscillating between nesting or resting?  Since past suggestions are often a prediction of future recommendations, let’s see what the Lord Jesus suggested to a woman named Martha who was being busy and likely bossy, instead of resting in preparation of the Lord Jesus coming to her house.

Luke 10: 38-42 NIV says, “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”  “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed— or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Now, if there is ever a reason to understand a woman’s strong desire to have everything perfect and in order for a new person coming to their home-it would be for the Lord Jesus-right?

But, NOTHING -we mean NOTHING is worth distracting you from grabbing a hold of what the Lord Jesus told Martha.  HE said, “you are worried and upset about many things, but FEW THINGS ARE NEEDED- or indeed only one.”  One being, Martha stopping her busyness and being at peace.

Certainly, we understand and have compassion on those who feel distracted from finding a sense of peace because they…

Picture have many things on their minds and even more things on their to do list BEFORE the baby comes. After our 7 pregnancies in 8 years,  we are far too familiar with all of the preparation needed for a newborn. And, still balancing the demands of managing “life” (e.g. responding to emails, returning phone calls, work, perhaps caring others, updating family and friends on social media like facebook and twitter-especially about the pregnancy, etc.).

But, instead of being overwhelmed or nesting as a means to address the worries, fears, and/or doubts trying to shake your faith from having the birth you desire most:

Remember to REST in God’s limitless love for you-and everything will be all right!

STOP-

  • Quite your spirit
  • Center your soul, and
  • Trust that your body is fearfully and wonderfully made by God (Psalms 139:14 KJV) to have a calming pregnancy and peaceful birth.

3 Ways to Help You Avoid Birth Regrets

First~ Learn to truly enjoy THE MOMENT.  This time you are having with your little one in the womb is special. Whatever you do- don’t allow “life to get in the way” from you enjoying each moment of your blessed pregnancy.  If you do, you may also be willing to allow repetitive regrets of “should of-could of-would of thoughts” to get in the way of  you nurturing your beautiful baby after he/she is born. For instance, who could of attended the birth-but didn’t, or who should of said what during labor-but wouldn’t, etc…

PictureAnd, if birth regrets continue without proper attention, postpartum depression can loom in the air and be exasperated by powerless thoughts of -”if only”….   “If only- I had more support/ help from person x, y, or z…; or, if only- there were more money or better job stability, etc.  Now, it can be healthy to spend some time examining your birth and identify aspects of it that you wish were different.  But, after you have determined what you would do differently moving forward-consider it a lesson learned.  Remember:

Philippians 3:13 KJV says, “… but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,”

Forget about things concerning your past birth (s) that you can not change. Use the lesson(s) you’ve learned to help you and/or others have better births.  Count all of your blessings-LITERALLY- and enjoy “THIS MOMENT” with your precious little baby!

Picture Second~ Do NOT to COMPARE your pregnancy, birth or life with others.  You, your baby and family are unique in your own right. CELEBRATE THIS!!

Too many mothers feel as though they have failed because their pregnancy or birth was not like the video they saw or the birth story they heard.

Rejoice, for the mother you saw in the birth video or the birth story you heard.  And, even if things seem less than favorable in your current pregnancy or birth - there is something that you can rejoice about too!

Matthew 6:34 The Message (MSG) says, “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

Do not compare your life with what is SEEMINGLY happening in  another mother’s pregnancy, birth or life.   Neither should you overly concern yourself with future events surrounding your pregnancy or upcoming birth that may or may not happen.

Have faith~ God is doing something in your life right now and He will help you deal with whatever hard things come up IF/when the time comes.

Picture Third~ Receive Encouragement!!  When words of encouragement or acts of kindness come to you during pregnancy or around your birth-  RECEIVE the encouragement!  Do NOT be like some who dismiss such gestures with a thought that a person is just being nice or polite, but doesn’t mean it.  Instead, when a spouse, friend or stranger shares a kind word or does a kind deed for you during pregnancy and/or around the time of birth- Thank God and Be Encouraged!  God Loves You and others do too!

Weight Gain from the Holidays AND Pregnancy-OH NO!!

Picture After our years together and being 7 months pregnant with baby number 5 -we appreciate how easy it is for us to still find many reasons to love each other.

But, I certainly don’t appreciate how easy it is for me to find MANY reasons to gain an excessive amount of weight during the holidays and pregnancy. 

 

Picture Now, this picture (to the left) and the first picture (above) were taken on the same day.  To me, I seem heavier in one picture than in the other. 

But, regardless of my complaints about the lighting, the angle of the photo I think makes me look heavier, etc., I KNOW that the real issue is that I have reached my range of healthy pregnancy weight gain for MY body.  My pre-pregnancy start weight and my prenatal visits records confirm what I already know about my weight. 

And, with this knowledge, I now hold the responsibility to remain in this healthy pregnancy weight gain range for the overall health of myself and this precious little one who depends on me.

Whether we are talking about prenatal or postpartum weight gain, don’t we all REALLY know when our weight is creeping into the overweight danger zone?  Pictures and/or concerned comments about excessive or rapid weight gain from health professionals or family and friends are often evidence of what we already know about our weight in our heart.

During this time of pregnancy, let us all BE ENCOURAGED to be proactive about what we already know about our weight and manage it during the prenatal and postpartum period with proper nutrition and prenatal fitness. The thinking that you can eat however much you want during pregnancy because you are eating for two (or three if you are having twins) is simply not true.

Picture Just as you want the best for your children, we as loving parents we want the best for our wonderful children as well-from pregnancy and beyond.  It is understandable why any pregnant mother or couple wants to counteract issues like having a baby with a low birth weight.

But, it must be understood that eating two or three times as much food as normal does not make a mother two or three times as likely to have a healthier baby.

Our bodies are FASCINATING, and during pregnancy our body utilizes the nutrients we eat more efficiently.  So, eating as much as you want in excess often just manifest into excessive weight gain for you and increases the risk of pregnancy and birth complications that can affect the health of you and your baby.

Picture So, as you move forward inspired to have the healthiest pregnancy and birth possible, remember,

If you’re at a healthy weight prior to pregnancy:

1. You need no additional calories in the first trimester,
2. You need about 300 extra calories a day in the second trimester, and
3. You need about 450 extra calories a day in the third trimester- which can look like a couple glasses of Pure Silk Coconut Milk and a handful of raw almonds and half of a small size apple or a glass of Pure Silk Coconut Milk, a chicken sandwich and an medium size apple.

If you are having multiples, overweight or underweight prior to pregnancy:
You’ll need more or less than what is listed above, which should be adjusted based on the weight goals you and your Obstetrician or Midwife set.
